Les mémoires manuscrits du père de l’auteure, son expérience du déplacement en temps de guerre, sont le point de départ de Hit Him on the Head with a Hard, Heavy Hammer. Se référant à ce que Thomas Hardy nomme « The Self-Unseeing » dans son poème éponyme de 1901, le film revient sur l’enfance perdu et sur les cadres de nos vies : l’éducation, le statut social, l’école, le travail et les liens familiaux. Le film est tout à la joie d’une mémoire retrouvée et une réflexion sur la façon dont nous écrivons notre passé et la manière dont il peut être de nouveau raconté.

Hit Him on the Head with a Hard, Heavy Hammer departs from the handwritten memoir of the filmmaker’s father and his experience of displacement during wartime. Referring to the notion Thomas Hardy termed ‘The Self-Unseeing’ in his eponymous 1901 poem, the film returns to childhood and the matters that harden us : upbringing, social status, education, labour, and familial bonds. The memoir weaves into the film as both a contemplation on mortality and an illustration of fading memory, reflecting on how we pen our pasts and how they can be re-told.
